The Kingdom of the Morning Calm (Journal, 2016) is a personal series inspired by my month-long journey through South Korea. My goal was to immerse myself in the culture and gain a richer understanding of the country. What I found was a land caught between worlds: the ancient and the hyper-modern, the serenity of historic temples and the vibrant chaos of nightly celebrations. With a humble point-and-shoot camera, I documented my experience as I moved from one city to the next; I felt more like a specter—hovering silently, observing and absorbing the contrasts that define South Korea. In the process, I discovered the heart of this fascinating nation and facets of myself I hadn’t yet explored.
